oh anne, what are we going to do with you?
Responses to Anne Coulters use of the word "fag" by various conservative and evangelical leaders
Alan Chambers, president of Exodus International, a group that helps homosexuals come out of the gay lifestyle:
“Used in any context, this hurtful word is used to demean an individual who is valuable to God, there is nothing to be gained by denigrating others with crude slurs. In doing so, we disgrace ourselves and discredit the truths we seek to publicly elevate.”
Michelle Malkin, a conservative columnist and speaker
“There are countless conservatives who bring their children to CPAC. It’s a family-friendly event. We expect CPAC to be a place where conservative role models speak with clarity, passion, and integrity. There are enough spewers of mindless filth, vulgarity, and hatred on TV, at the movies, and in the public schools. We don’t expect our children to be exposed to that garbage at the nation’s preeminent conservative gathering.”
The American Conservative Union (ACU), the primary host of CPAC
“Ann Coulter is known for comments that can be both provocative and outrageous. That was certainly the case in her 2007 CPAC appearance and previous ones as well. But as a point of clarification, let me make it clear that ACU and CPAC do not condone or endorse the use of hate speech.”
"We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. We weren't punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That's war. And this is war." ~ Anne Coulter herself
To equate the spread the of Word of God with bigotry and murder is absurd and Upsetting. To do so is to equate Christ and the Apostles with the KKK or the Spanish Inquistors. Christ died for our sins. He didnt Kill for them.
"54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? 55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. 56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them." (Luke 9)
It bothers me the way people like Ann Coulter represent Christianity. A large part of being a Christian is evangelism. To evangelize is basicaly to spread the Good Word (it has nothing to do with genocide). The Word is the Truth. We must spread it through peace and Grace. It seems that when evanglizing many people compromise one of the two. Either compromise our commitment to the Truth or to Grace. Truth is often compromised through shame and embarassment, Grace through violence and hateful language, BOTH through ignorance and simplistic thinking.
One of the most complicated and controversial subjects of Evangelism is that of gay marriage. Many Christians have difficulty reconsiling their duty to preach Truth with the Word of that Truth, commanding us to love our neighbor. So what is one to do? Their is a budhist concept known as walking the middle path. The eye of the storm if you will. The common ground between two extremes. Ironically this path is spelled out for us by the lives of Christ and the Apostles. These were men uncompromising in their quest for truth. They were furthermore uncompromising in their quest for grace. So how did they do it?
And hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners." Mark 2:17
Christ did not seperate Himself for anyone, whether they be righteous or sinful. He loved and ministered to all. This is the golden standard of ministry. How can we apply this to modern day evangelism?
I have many gay friends. I have many Chrisitan friends. I have many Christian friends who have gay friends. We live together. We laugh together. We work together. We have many disagreements. My gay friends know that I am a Christian, and conservative and traditional in my interpretation of Scirpture. I know that many of them are still searching for their spirituality. When we discuss issues of spirituality I strive to be uncompromising in my beliefs, while remaining tactful.
My two closest friends are bisexual. It can be difficult at times and uncomfortable, but struggle, and the percivierance through that struggle, are the mark of a strong relationship. As it is written, we must love our neighbor as we love ourselves, and NOTHING can make me stop loving them, caring about them, being their for them anytime they need me to be. I disgusts me to see fellow christians endorsing websits such as "Godhatesfags.com" or to see them cast gays out of their churches or refuse them communion. As a conservative Christian I am subject to the Word of God, and are the following Words not written?
"1 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 Jesus answered, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish."
(Luke 13)
and once again, is not also written
And hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners." Mark 2:17
It is not written NUMEROUS times that we shall let all with ears hear?
Many christians love to tell liberals that they can't pick and choose which scirpture they like and don't like. That we can't shape God to our own purposes. How then can we deny the law as it is explicitly written? That NO sinner is above another. That ALL are loved by and that ALL need God. And finaly that ALL must LOVE their neighbour as they love THEMSELVES. Not their straight neighbours. ALL their neighbours. I am a conservative Christian and a left leaning Moderate. I love God and love my friends and I love my family. It is by my love of God that I strive to follow His commands and love ALL of my neighbours and treat them with the respect that I would hope to be treated with myself. I do not support gay marriage and I am uncompromsing in my beliefs, and am their for also uncompromising in my love. After all, it is written that we cannot expect God to forgive our sins, to have mercy on us, and to love us, if we to do not show such to our neighbors. And Lord knows they show it to us. When I am unhappy my friends are always their for me, both gay and straight. The show me uncompromising love and compasion despite our differences. My neighbors are lesbians, and when I was locked out of my house they took me in, made me tea and cookies, and allowed me to stay for as long as I liked, even when they went out, until my mom came home to let me in. Christians who hate gays should be shamed by this.
We must all strive to walk to the middle path. Uncompromising in our Truth. Uncompromising in our Grace. Uncompromosing in our love and respect. We may not agree, and we need not support the actions of that which we disagree with. But we MUST support eachother and show eachother love at all costs, lest we be guilty of the very things we strive against and be called hypochrites before God.
I am not perfect. I never will be. At times I fail and fall and my feelings and nature over take me and I become that which I seak to combat. I am a sinner and I NEED God, because I am weak, and I can't do this alone.
and if you dont know, no you know~B.I.G.
